Pediatric surgeon honored with WakeMed’s highest teaching honor
RALEIGH, N.C. (May 22, 2017) – WakeMed Health & Hospitals recently honored Duncan Phillips, MD, with the prestigious Harry E. Dascomb, MD, Award. WakeMed’s highest teaching honor, the Dascomb Award is presented annually to a physician who demonstrates excellence in teaching and patient care.
Dr. Phillips’ many contributions in medical education and patient care made him a truly deserving candidate. As the surgeon-in-chief of WakeMed Children’s Hospital and the director of pediatric surgery for WakeMed Physician Practices, Dr. Phillips specializes in minimally invasive surgical procedures for infants and children. He helps children get back their lives by providing important access to his specialty to area families.
He was nominated by his peers and selected by the Dascomb Award committee, which includes doctors from WakeMed Physician Practices and community physicians. As one of Dr. Phillips’ nominators shared, “his passion inspires everyone to figure out how to be better.”
Harry Dascomb, MD, was an infectious disease physician at WakeMed who was recognized for his bedside clinical and teaching skills and for his ability to provide compassionate patient care. The Harry E. Dascomb, MD, Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching and Care was established in his honor. Recipients must have three or more years of clinical experience and exhibit leadership in establishing, maintaining and supporting clinical teaching programs at WakeMed.
